The basics

What is a virtual town hall?

A virtual town hall is a town hall meeting held online. Leaders share updates, then open the floor to questions, and the audience joins from wherever they are instead of filling a room. The format is the same whether a CEO is speaking to employees or a mayor is speaking to residents: a short program, honest answers and a record people can come back to.

Restream is the live streaming side of that meeting. You produce the town hall in Restream Studio, send it to every channel your audience already uses, and keep the questions, the recording and the numbers in one place.

One virtual town hall platform for companies and the public sector

Live

For companies

Corporate town halls and all-hands

Share results, strategy and org news with every office at the same time. Stream into the Slack channels your team already reads, or send one registration link that works for the live town hall and the replay, so people in other time zones catch up later.

  • One gated link for registration, live and replay
  • Up to 10 executives and guests on stage

Live

For the public sector

  • YouTube, Facebook, X and your website at once
  • Residents ask questions from any platform
  • Recording and transcript for the archive
  • A sign language interpreter on stage as a guest

The format

Everything a virtual town hall meeting needs

A town hall has four parts: the program, the questions, the reach and the record. Restream covers each one from the browser, and your audience has nothing to install.

Live Q&A and AMAs

Take questions from every channel in one place

Questions from YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook, X, Slack and the registration page arrive in a single chat. A teammate moderates backstage, skips the duplicates and puts the best questions on screen while the host keeps talking. The same setup runs an open AMA with your CEO, a department head or an elected official.

  • One chat for YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook, X and Slack
  • Selected questions shown on screen as a banner
  • Attendees invited on stage to ask in person

Town hall live streaming to 30+ destinations

Live stream the town hall on YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook, X and other platforms at the same time, so people watch where they already spend their day.

A player on your own website

Embed the Restream web player on your intranet or your city’s website, so people can watch without a social media account.

Restream Chat

Live in Slack

Stream the town hall into Slack channels for up to 10,000 viewers, with reactions, questions and the recording in the thread.

Registration on one link

Live Webinar gates the town hall behind a registration page. The same link serves the live stream and the replay, and registrants export as a CSV.

Live Webinar

Studio production in the browser

Put up to 10 people on stage, share slides and screens, add your branding, and switch scenes, with nothing to install.

Built for public meetings

A town hall can’t go dark halfway through

Council sessions run long, meeting rooms come with their own AV, and IT wants to know who has access. Restream is set up for all three.

Never drop the meeting

  • Disconnect protection keeps the town hall live when your connection drops, on Business and Enterprise plans.
  • Send a primary and a backup feed from two encoders or two internet connections, and the backup takes over automatically on Enterprise.
  • Long council sessions are covered: recordings run up to 10 hours per stream, with custom limits on Enterprise. YouTube only archives live streams shorter than 12 hours, so keep your own recording.

Already have AV in the room?

  • Stream from the cameras, switcher or encoder you already use, or from software like OBS or vMix, over RTMP. Enterprise adds SRT, HLS and WHIP.
  • Send a meeting that runs in Zoom out to YouTube, Facebook and your website with the Zoom integration.
  • Set your channels up once. When the room starts streaming, Restream goes live everywhere, so nobody has to run it by hand.

Enterprise controls and security

  • Single sign-on on Enterprise, plus admin, co-host and co-producer roles on Business and Enterprise.
  • A separate workspace for every chamber, department or office.
  • SOC 2 Type I and GDPR compliance, a 99.99% uptime SLA and 24/7 priority support.
  • Dedicated onboarding and on-call event support on Enterprise for high-stakes town halls.

Step by step

How to host a virtual town hall in 6 steps

The same run of show works for a 50-person team meeting and a county-wide public forum. Plan it once, then reuse it every quarter.

  1. 01

Set the goal and the run of show

Decide what people should know when the town hall ends. Keep the updates short and leave at least a third of the time for questions.

  2. 02

    Choose where people will watch

Employees watch in Slack or on a registration page. Residents watch on YouTube, Facebook or your website. Restream covers all of them in one stream.

  3. 03

    Set up Restream Studio

Invite your speakers, upload slides, add your logo and colors, and prepare scenes for the countdown, the updates and the Q&A.

  4. 04

    Collect questions early

Ask for questions in the invite, then open the chat when you go live. Give one person the job of moderator so the host can stay on camera.

  5. 05

    Go live everywhere at once

Start from your browser. Restream sends the town hall to every destination you picked and brings the chat back into one panel.

  6. 06

Share the replay and follow up

Send the recording to people who missed it, post clips of the key answers, and reply to the questions you ran out of time for.

FAQ

Virtual town hall FAQ

What is a virtual town hall meeting?

A virtual town hall meeting is a town hall held online. A leader, such as a CEO, a mayor or a member of Congress, shares updates and answers questions live, and the audience joins from a browser or a social platform instead of a meeting room. Most virtual town halls are recorded, so people who missed them can watch later.

What is the difference between a virtual town hall and a tele-town hall?

A tele-town hall runs over the phone: constituents get a call, listen in, and can press a key to ask a question. A virtual town hall is a video stream people watch on YouTube, Facebook, a website or an internal channel, with questions in the chat. Restream runs video town halls. It does not place phone calls.

What should I look for in virtual town hall software?

Check how people join (a browser link or the platforms they already use), how many speakers you can put on stage, how questions reach the host, whether you can stream to several channels at once, and what happens to the recording. Restream handles all five from the browser.

How do you run Q&A during a virtual town hall?

Collect questions in advance, then open the live chat when you start. With Restream, questions from every platform arrive in one chat, a moderator picks which ones to answer, and the selected question appears on screen. With Live Webinar, you can also invite an attendee on stage to ask in person.

Can I live stream a town hall to YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook and my website at the same time?

Yes. Restream multistreams one town hall to YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook, X, Slack and 30+ other destinations at once, and the Restream web player puts the same live stream on your own website or intranet.

Can I keep a company town hall internal?

Stream only to the Slack channels you choose, or to a Live Webinar registration page that you share internally, and leave public destinations like YouTube off. Keep in mind that anyone who has the registration link can sign up, so treat the link as internal.

What happens if the internet connection drops during a town hall?

On Business and Enterprise plans, disconnect protection keeps the stream live when your connection drops. Enterprise also supports a primary and a backup feed from two encoders or two internet connections, and the backup takes over automatically.

Can we stream from the cameras and encoder already in our meeting room?

Yes. Point any encoder, switcher or streaming software that supports RTMP, such as OBS or vMix, at Restream. Enterprise also accepts SRT, HLS and WHIP. Set your destinations up once, and the town hall goes live on all of them as soon as the room starts streaming.

Can we add a sign language interpreter?

Yes. Invite the interpreter as a guest in Restream Studio so they stay on screen next to the speaker for the whole meeting. After the town hall, you can download the transcript, and AI Clips adds captions to the highlight clips you share.

How many people can attend a virtual town hall?

It depends on where they watch. Live Webinar holds up to 100 attendees on Standard and Professional plans, up to 500 on Business, and 1,000 or more on Enterprise. A stream into Slack reaches up to 10,000 viewers, and the website player holds up to 1,000 concurrent viewers on Business. On YouTube, Facebook and other public platforms, the audience size is set by the platform, not by Restream.

Can I record a town hall and share the replay?

Yes. On paid plans, Restream records the town hall in the cloud. With Live Webinar, the replay appears on the same link as soon as the stream ends, and you can switch playback off at any time. You can also download the recording and its transcript.

Can I repeat a town hall for another time zone?

Yes. Upload the recording to Upload & Stream and schedule it to go out as a live stream at a time that suits the other region. It plays on every destination you pick, just like a live town hall.

Can I stream a town hall that runs in Zoom?

Yes. The Zoom integration sends a Zoom meeting or webinar to YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook and other destinations through Restream, so people outside the call can watch.

Can government offices use Restream for public town halls?

Yes. Public agencies use Restream to stream town halls, community meetings and briefings to residents on every channel, and co-producers and moderators can be assigned so only authorized staff run the broadcast. See Restream for government for more examples.

How much does virtual town hall software cost?

You can start multistreaming on Restream's free plan. Town halls that need a registration page use the Live Webinar add-on: $99 per month for up to 100 attendees on Standard and Professional, $299 per month for up to 500 on Business, and custom pricing for 1,000 or more. See pricing for plan details.
